CHARACTER
Name: Saralegui Sargon
Canon: Kyo Kara Maoh!
Age: 15
Demigod/Hunter/Satyr/Nymph: Demigod; Son of Hypnos
Demigod abilities: He has the standard demigod abilities, of course, if perhaps somewhat lesser battle-related ones, between his godly parents being less fighting-inclined and he himself being the same. In addition to those, however, he comes with the hypnokinesis typical of Cabin Fifteen campers. In its simplest form, this includes the ability to put others to sleep, but he's fairly skilled at manipulating the dreams of others as well. He's also rather disturbingly adept at using hypnosis to put others into a trance, but at least he doesn't abuse those abilities. Most of the time.

Personality:
On the surface, Saralegui appears to be a highly likable individual. He's kind, charismatic, intelligent, considerate, and attractive on top of everything else. He's friendly to everyone, it seems, and most are quickly charmed by that affability. He's always pleasant for polite conversation and always sympathetic to the troubles of others, and rarely troubled by anything in return.

Appearances can be deceiving, however, especially in this case. The face he puts on publicly is finely tailored to ensure a good reputation, knowing all too well that just being himself isn't likely to gain him many allies. Truthfully, Saralegui is selfish, cunning, manipulative and paranoid. He distrusts others as a rule, keeping most interactions shallow and relatively meaningless so he can maintain the illusion of being friendly and sociable without allowing anyone too close. He has no qualms about using others for his own purposes, never hesitating to step on others if it suits his ambition.

Going a layer even deeper, that ambition is closely tied to a deep loneliness and a need for acceptance. Having been more or less ignored by his father all his life, with a mother that essentially abandoned him, Saralegui spurned the idea of sincere love and affection from an early age, settling for other forms of attention to fill the resulting hole. He's content to have people's respect, love, hate, fear, whatever, as long as it means they're paying him the attention he was always denied. He tends towards gathering the more positives forms of it, but if he has to put a person in their place to make them properly acknowledge him, he'll happily do it.

If he were entirely honest, he's an unhappy and lonely kid. But Saralegui isn't often honest, least of all with himself. He's excessively concerned with appearances, to the point that he almost seems like an entirely different person when someone actually gets him to be genuine, and he's intensely harsh in the face of lies or abandonment. Even if it makes him a hypocrite, he won't forgive being ignored or tossed aside or lied to. In his canon, he only seems to begin being truly sincere with the main character Yuuri after he's revealed his true colors and Yuuri forgives him for it and promises to always trust him, rather than break ties with him. It's extremely roundabout and leaves him entirely alone most of the time, but it seems like he can't bring himself to really trust anyone until he's witnessed absolute proof of their loyalty to him. Basically, shove enough kindness down his throat despite him screwing you over (on multiple occasions), and maybe he'll be your friend for real.

It's not as if he's an absolutely terrible person, though. Saralegui has the capacity to be cruel and he usually has a hidden agenda, but much of what he is is just a defense mechanism against a world that proved itself to him to be just as cruel. He very much has an "ends justify the means" sort of mentality, but his ends are oftentimes entirely good, if selfishly motivated -- in the anime canon, all his plotting is apparently intended to create a lasting peace between the human and demon races (if only so that he can be a better king than his father was). When there's nothing at stake to color his interactions with others, he can be genuinely pleasant. His conversations with some people might lack depth, but that allows him the freedom to be lighthearted and relaxed about a subject. After all, it's only the things that matter that he has to police himself on so carefully. At times he can be honestly friendly and good-natured, and as seen at the very end of the series when he's finally being entirely himself with Yuuri, he has a relaxed and playfully teasing manner.

He's generally a bit mischievous and opportunistic, much like his godly parent in this setting, and his methods tend more towards subtle action and trickery than direct confrontation. He's more likely to quietly use his abilities and manipulate others to achieve his goals than to take up a sword and fight for it. He isn't quite lazy, just efficient, but his apparently passive attitude towards these things can oftentimes make him seem more like a lazy monarch than a constantly-scheming strategist. It certainly doesn't help that he's a fairly heavy sleeper. In the novel canon, Saralegui simply dozes off in several situations where he's bored, once while locked in a closet and another time while tied up and on horseback. He isn't easily woken up, and once actually roused it takes him a while to be properly conscious.

AU History:
Saralegui's backstory really begins with his parents -- mortal and godly alike. His mother was a beautiful young woman named Alazon living on an island in the Mediterranean. The Greek god Hypnos had lusted after her from a distance, but she was infamous for her disinterest in personal relationships, and the god was too cowardly to attempt any advances. But one day Alazon unexpectedly fell in love with a rich man on vacation from the US, and Hypnos found his opportunity. Using his shapeshifting abilities to look like her lover, the god was able to finally achieve his conquest and let his interest wander elsewhere. Alazon eventually found herself with a child, but unable to provide for it on her own and too busy with her family's business to leave herself, she sent her infant son off to be raised by the man she believed to be the father, her lover Gilbert.

So Saralegui grew up in a wealthy household with a father who almost entirely ignored him. He never really understood why his father was so distant with him, but truthfully, Gilbert barely understood it either. The boy was entirely unlike him in every way, delicate and charismatic instead of tough and severe, and the disconnect was unsettling. Saralegui was left to the care of various nannies and servants while Gilbert's focus forever remained on his business. For the first few years, he worked endlessly at trying to get his father's attention, everything from succeeding wherever he thought he might find praise to causing trouble in hopes of even just being lectured. All his attempts failed to make the man so much as glance at him and eventually he simply gave up, leading to resentment and requited distance with his father.

Left to his own devices, Saralegui took to satisfying his need for attention elsewhere. He excelled in his studies despite dyslexia that he kept well under wraps, working through such issues on his own through sheer stubbornness and a need to do everything alone, and while not at all very sporty, found himself well suited to fencing and horseback riding. He constructed a flawless reputation, becoming well-liked in most social circles while subtly avoiding anything more than shallow relationships with others. People in general had proven themselves so unworthy of his trust or affection that he settled for their distant admiration and respect.

Being so adept at hiding the flaws that generally marked a demigod, and being a child of a minor god, Saralegui managed to fly under the radar for years as far as both monsters and the school Satyr went. It was only a freak accident that revealed his abilities at all, when he was fifteen and a particularly unpleasant teacher at his school had managed to frustrate him so much that he somehow knocked the man out cold without so much as touching him. Most of the class simply assumed the teacher was just a well-functioning narcoleptic, but by chance the Searcher at that school happened to be in the class at the time. One long, private conversation later (complete with a display of some distinctly goat-ish parts), Saralegui was convinced.

After all, some things certainly sounded impossible, but he trusted his own mind too much to think he'd gone insane, even after seeing an actual Satyr.

He turned down all offers of a special camp for a while, content where he was, until a few months later, his father died. Of simple sickness and old age, actually, but with Saralegui still being only fifteen (however adult he might have thought himself), with various relatives on his father's side now fighting over the business and estate, and having spotted monsters lurking around more and more, he eventually agreed.

Arriving at Camp Half Blood only made things more confusing, as it turned out. Being claimed quickly after arriving was nice and all, but learning it was by a male god when he'd been assuming his godly parent must have been his absent mother threw him for a loop. And as Hypnos hasn't ever bothered with visiting him, that's one mystery that remains unsolved.

Counselor: The spot is empty, so he'll happily take that title.

SAMPLES
Iris Message:
[for someone attempting an iris message for the first time, here's someone who seems pretty at ease with the whole "talking at a rainbow" thing. he's all smiles and politeness -- and yeah, that is indeed a guy. though it might not be very clear until he starts talking (and not even then, if you aren't very perceptive).]

Nice weather, here. If it's really like this all the time, then I might not mind this place after all.

[talking about the weather seems like such a cliche, but he does it with such an easy charm that one might mistake him for a child of aphrodite.]

My name is Saralegui Sargon. I suppose I'm a new arrival here, but I've done my research so I promise no one will have to explain every little thing to me. Still, I hope you'll forgive me if I do trip up anywhere. I'll be taking care of Cabin Fifteen for the time being, so that's where I'll likely be if anyone needs anything. Just try not to fall asleep.

[he says it teasingly, but no that is kind of a serious threat. you've officially been warned and he no longer has to take any responsibility for anyone passing out and smashing their head on something.]
